In this example, for two people, you’d calculate (1 + 0.5) / 2 = 0.75 showers per person per day. This average helps us estimate your household’s water usage more accurately.

Consider the habits of all household members, factoring in those who prefer quick showers versus those who enjoy longer ones. For instance, if one person typically spends about 5 minutes for a quick shower, while another indulges in 15-minute showers, you’d calculate an average between these ranges. A practical approach is to add the lengths of the shortest and longest usual showers together and divide by 2. Using the example given, (5 minutes + 15 minutes) / 2 = 10 minutes average shower length. If unsure, an average of 8 to 10 minutes per shower is a common benchmark. Adjust this figure based on your household’s habits to ensure the most accurate savings estimate.

Input the flow rate of your current showerheads, typically measured in gallons per minute (GPM). If you’re unsure, older showerheads (pre-1992) often have a flow rate of about 2.5 to 5.5 GPM. You can sometimes find the flow rate labeled on the showerhead itself. If not, assume a standard rate of 2.5 GPM for older models. For more accuracy, place a bucket under the showerhead, turn on the shower at the pressure you usually use, time how many seconds it takes to fill a 1-gallon bucket, and calculate the flow rate (Gallons / (Seconds/60)).

For example, if each person uses the faucet for about 5 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes for meal prep and dishwashing, and another 5 minutes in the evening, that’s 20 minutes per person per day.

To accurately estimate water savings from upgrading your faucets, it’s important to know the flow rate of your current faucets, measured in gallons per minute (GPM). You can often find this information imprinted on the aerator or the faucet itself. If it’s not visible, a simple way to measure is to place a container under the faucet, turn it on fully, and time how many seconds it takes to fill a one-gallon container. Then, calculate the flow rate (60 divided by the number of seconds it took to fill the container equals the GPM). If you’re unable to measure or find this information, a standard flow rate for older faucets is typically around 2.2 GPM.

To find out the cost of water in your area for the calculations, check your most recent water utility bill. It often lists the price per 1,000 gallons. If you find the rate given in cubic feet (1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons), you can convert it to gallons and then calculate the cost per 1,000 gallons. For example, if your bill states water is $3.50 per 1,000 cubic feet, convert this to gallons (1,000 cubic feet = 7,480 gallons), then find the cost per 1,000 gallons from there. If your bill or local water supplier’s website does not provide this information clearly, we would use $5.68 as National Average according to EPA.
